20Mn vs 1022
These two grades are listed as equivalents of each other: their chemistry windows overlap and they serve the same applications. They are not always identical — check the differences below before substituting, especially in certified designs.
20Mn
Carbon Steel
20Mn is the high-manganese variant of grade 20 in GB/T 699: the same low carbon but 0.70–1.00% manganese for higher strength and hardenability while staying weldable.
Standards: AISI 1022 (near) · GB 20Mn (GB/T 699)
1022
Carbon Steel
1022 is a low carbon, higher manganese steel with better hardenability than 1020 at the same carbon level. It is used for carburized parts and moderately loaded components where 1020 would be too soft in the core.
Standards: DIN C22 (near) · AISI 1022 · JIS S20C (near) · GB 20Mn (near)
