U71Mn
Data under reviewU71Mn is China’s standard carbon rail steel to GB/T 2585, the pearlitic C-Mn grade laid on most conventional-speed lines. Wear resistance comes from its high carbon and manganese; weldability is limited and rail joints are aluminothermic or flash-butt welded.
Chemical composition
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| C | 0.65–0.76 |
| Si | 0.15–0.35 |
| Mn | 1.10–1.40 |
| P | ≤0.030 |
| S | ≤0.030 |

Properties
| Tensile strength | ≥880 MPa (as-rolled rail) |
| Hardness | ~260–300 HB (rail head, typ.) |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ |
Heat treatment
Supplied as-rolled (pearlitic); head-hardened variants are quenched from rolling heat for heavy-haul lines.

Applications & Processing
Applications: Railway rails (43/50/60/75 kg/m profiles), turnouts, crane rails (with profile-specific standards).
Processing: Not a fabrication steel — rails are rolled to profile, straightened and drilled/fishplated or welded by qualified rail processes only.
