SCM415

Data verified

SCM415 is the low-carbon Cr-Mo carburizing steel of JIS G4053 — the Japanese gear and pinion grade in the AISI 4118 class. Its 0.15% carbon core stays tough after carburizing while the case reaches the low-60s HRC.

Applications & Processing

Applications: Small gears and pinions, camshafts, transmission parts, bolts and shafts needing a hard case on a tough core.

Processing: Machines well before carburizing; the Mo addition gives more uniform case hardening than plain Cr grades (SCr415 class).

FAQ

SCM415 or SCM420?
Same Cr-Mo carburizing family: SCM420 has more carbon (0.18–0.23%) and a stronger core, SCM415 carburizes with a slightly tougher, lower-strength core. Gear size and core-load decide.
