Mn13 (Hadfield)

Data under review

Mn13 is the high-manganese Hadfield steel (ZGMn13 / 1.3401 / ASTM A128): soft and extremely tough as solution-treated, it work-hardens under impact to 450–550 HB at the surface while the core stays ductile. It is the classic answer where wear arrives WITH heavy impact — the duty that cracks hard AR plate. Supplied almost entirely as castings; chemistry above is the typical published window shared by the GB/DIN/ASTM variants.

Properties

Hardness (solution treated)180–230 HB
Work hardeningTo 450–550 HB in service
Tensile strength700–900 MPa (typ.)
Density7.85 g/cm³

Heat treatment

Solution treat (water toughening) 1050–1100 °C and water quench. Never reheat above ~300 °C — carbide precipitation embrittles the steel.

Applications & Processing

Applications: Jaw and cone crusher plates, railway crossings and frogs, excavator teeth, shot-blast cabinets, dredge and mining wear castings.

Processing: Machining is notoriously difficult (work-hardens ahead of the tool) — cast to near-net shape, grind rather than cut. Welding with austenitic high-Mn or stainless fillers, low heat input, no preheat.

FAQ

Mn13 or NM450 for a crusher jaw?
Mn13 — jaws live on impact, and Hadfield steel hardens exactly where the rock hits it. NM450 wins in low-impact sliding abrasion (chutes, liners) where Mn13 never gets the impacts it needs to harden.
Why can’t Mn13 be flame cut and reheated freely?
Slow cooling or reheating into the 300–800 °C range precipitates grain-boundary carbides and destroys its toughness. Cut with plasma/waterjet and keep service temperatures low.
