A216 WCB
Data verifiedASTM A216 WCB is the world’s default cast carbon steel for valve bodies, pump casings and pressure castings — the “B” carbon grade with weldability good enough for cast-to-pipe joints. If a cast steel part has no special temperature duty, it is almost certainly WCB.

Heat treatment
Castings are annealed, normalized, or normalized and tempered per ASTM A216; weld repairs and PWHT follow the purchase specification and code (e.g. ASME B31 / Section VIII).

Applications & Processing
Applications: Valve bodies and bonnets, pump casings, flanges and general pressure-containing castings to ~425 °C.
Processing: Cast, then machine; weldable with standard carbon-steel practice — the reason WCB displaced higher-carbon WCA/WCC in most valve designs. Magnetic-particle and radiographic examination per MSS/API as ordered.
FAQ
- WCB vs WCC?
- WCC allows more carbon and manganese (tensile 485–655 MPa, yield ≥275 MPa) and is slightly stronger but a little less weld-friendly. WCB remains the default valve-body grade.
- A216 WCB vs forged A105?
- Same service family: WCB is the cast equivalent, A105 the forged. Valves mix both — cast bodies, forged flanges — on one certificate package.
