410

Data verified

410 is the basic martensitic stainless steel, the lowest-cost grade that can be hardened by heat treatment. It trades corrosion resistance (12% chromium only) for strength, hardness and wear resistance.

Heat treatment

Anneal 830–885 °C slow cool; harden 925–1010 °C oil/air; temper 205–650 °C — avoid tempering at 400–580 °C where toughness and corrosion resistance dip.

Applications & Processing

Applications: Cutlery, valve stems and seats, pump shafts, fasteners, turbine parts, steam and gas hardware.

Processing: Machines well annealed; weldable with preheat (150–300 °C) and post-weld temper; corrosion resistance is the lowest of the common stainless grades.

FAQ

Will 410 rust?
It can: with only about 12% chromium its passive film is thin, so it stains in wet or marine service. It is intended for mildly corrosive environments or where it is kept oiled.
