301

Data verified

301 is a metastable austenitic stainless steel with lower nickel than 304, so it work-hardens dramatically during cold forming. It is the classic grade for springs and high-strength formed parts in stainless.

Applications & Processing

Applications: Springs, railcar and trailer panels, aircraft structural parts, conveyor belts, fasteners.

Processing: Excellent for roll forming and deep drawing with high springback control needed; weldable, though the heat-affected zone loses temper strength.

FAQ

Why is 301 used for springs?
Its austenite is less stable, so cold rolling converts part of it to martensite and raises tensile strength above 1000 MPa while keeping useful corrosion resistance.
