20CrMnTi

Data verified

20CrMnTi is China’s dominant carburizing gear steel (GB/T 3077): a Cr-Mn steel micro-alloyed with titanium for grain control, produced in huge tonnage for automotive and industrial gearboxes.

Properties

Tensile strength≥1080 MPa (GB/T 3077 reference, carburized + Q&T blank)
Yield strength≥850 MPa (reference)
Case hardness (carburized)58–64 HRC
Density7.85 g/cm³

Heat treatment

Carburize 900–930 °C; quench 830–860 °C oil; temper 150–200 °C. Titanium keeps the austenite grain fine during long carburizing cycles.

Applications & Processing

Applications: Automotive gears and shafts, gearbox pinions, high-duty carburized parts.

Processing: Excellent carburizing response and core strength; the default Chinese gear-steel offer, often ordered as 20CrMnTiH with a hardenability band.

FAQ

Why does 20CrMnTi contain titanium?
Titanium (0.04–0.10%) pins the grain boundaries during long, hot carburizing cycles, preventing the grain coarsening that plain Cr-Mn gear steels suffer — that is its advantage over the 20CrMnTi-free 5120 family.
20CrMnTi vs 20CrMnTiH?
The H variant adds a guaranteed hardenability (Jominy) band on top of the same chemistry — specified for critical automotive gears.
