1008
Data verified1008 is a very low carbon steel with excellent cold formability and weldability. It is the standard grade for cold-headed fasteners, wire products and deep-drawn parts where strength demands are minimal.
Chemical composition
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| C | ≤0.10 |
| Mn | 0.30–0.50 |
| P | ≤0.040 |
| S | ≤0.050 |
Weight percent, per the governing standard ranges. Actual values per heat are on the mill certificate.
Properties
| Tensile strength | 300–380 MPa (hot rolled, typ.) |
| Yield strength | ≥170 MPa (typ.) |
| Density | 7.85 g/cm³ |
| Weldability | Excellent |
Heat treatment
Used as-rolled, cold drawn or case carburized; too low in carbon for quench hardening.

Applications & Processing
Applications: Cold-headed bolts and rivets, wire, nails, deep-drawn and stamped parts, chain.
Processing: Outstanding formability and machinability for a plain steel; carburize if a wear-resistant case is needed.
