A387 Gr.5 vs A387 Gr.22

These two grades are listed as equivalents of each other: their chemistry windows overlap and they serve the same applications. They are not always identical — check the differences below before substituting, especially in certified designs.

A387 Gr.5

Structural & HSLA Steel

ASTM A387 Grade 5 is the 5Cr-0.5Mo pressure-vessel plate for the hottest, most corrosive refinery duties, where its chromium content resists sulfidation and hot hydrogen attack that would destroy lower-alloy plate. It is the plate counterpart of P5 pipe.

A387 Gr.22

Structural & HSLA Steel

ASTM A387 Grade 22 is the 2.25Cr-1Mo plate behind hydrocracking and hydrotreating reactors — the workhorse alloy for hot, high-pressure hydrogen service. Its creep strength and hydrogen resistance hold to roughly 600 °C.
